there goes the neighbourhood

I’ve always had great neighbours, on both sides, great because a) I hardly ever saw them, and b) I hardly ever heard them!  I know, I know, I’m not a people person!  But, a few  weeks ago, on the one side, my neighbours of 20 years moved out, and new ones moved in.  They have been there exactly 6 weeks and have knocked my door about 4 times so far.  Each time wanting to borrow something, or  park their car on my driveway, or wanting to know where the nearest fish & chip shop is.  Now, I will always help someone if I can, and, wanting to be neighbourly and not seen as ‘aloof’ I helped them out on every occasion they asked for it.  They have been quite noisy, but that’s ok I guess, It’s a semi-detached house and they are decorating, there is bound to be a little noise.   Thing is, suddenly a dog has appeared from nowhere.  I haven’t seen it, but by god I hear it.  It barks when anyone comes to my door, it barks when anyone comes to their door, it barks when it hears a car pull up in the street, it barks in the mornings, and it howls like a banshee late at night.  I feel sorry for it a little, because it’s obviously needing something to be so noisy.  But, the humans in that house don’t seem to bother.  Either they can’t hear it, or they are that used to it they just ignore it. My peace has been shattered, and I have no idea how to approach them about this, or, indeed if I should at all! I’m open to suggestions or advice…
