As she walked alone along the empty streets, taking her once a day opportunity for essential exercise, her head was swarming with all sorts of thoughts.
How life had changed in such a short time. It used to be that there was safety in numbers, now it was only safe to be alone. At least she could be reasonably sure there would be no crazies hiding in the shadows, waiting to attack a woman alone, or could she? Maybe people like that didn’t care about social distancing, and staying home to stay safe, maybe they would take advantage of the situation, and risk their own life. What if? Maybe she wasn’t so safe out alone.
Having convinced herself that maybe there could be some danger after all, she picked up her pace and scurried along the street, looking over her shoulder now and then just to be sure she wasn’t being followed.
She had to pass the small corner shop before she made it home, and she knew she needed to buy a couple of essential items, some milk, maybe some bread if they had some. She crossed the road and as she approached to door of the small convenience store, she peered in through the glass pane, squinting to see if anyone else was in there. She could see there was a queue for the checkout, admittedly there were only three people, and they were taking note of the yellow and black tape marking the safe distance on the floor, but even so, she wasn’t going to take the risk.
She hurried back across the road, and onto the side of the street where she lived, her little house was in sight now, only a few more steps. She was very soon popping her key in the lock and opening her door. Once inside, she locked the door, drew her blinds and breathed a sigh of relief. Safe at last.
Maybe, if she was brave enough, she would try again tomorrow, she knew she would have to at some point, because, she HATED black coffee!
