I had a little car trouble this morning. I haven’t actually driven my car for some weeks now, but I have been going out to start her up every few days, just to keep her ticking over. Well this morning she didn’t want to play. I got in the drivers seat, put the key in and turned on the ignition, I opened my window, and turned the key the last little bit to start, and…nothing. No coughing, no spluttering, she didn’t even try. I left her a little bit, then tried again. Nothing. I couldn’t even shut the window. She was totally and utterly dead. I was pretty sure the battery had died, but there was a niggle in the back of mind that it could be more. She is an old car, it could have been anything. I phoned a mechanic friend I know, who advised me to call the local Exhaust and Tyre centre. I called them, luckily they were working. I told him exactly what had happened and straight away he said it needed a new battery. Within half an hour of my call, a very nice man appeared with a shiny new battery and fitted it for me. It took him ten minutes. Before he left, he gave me some parting advice, drive your car for 20-30 mins at least once a week. Just starting her up for a few minutes is not enough to keep the battery charged. So I told him I would be sure to do that. However, I’m now wondering if driving my car just to keep the battery in good health is classed as essential travel. It must be, right?
Anyway, the out come of the story is, I am now £100 poorer, but at least my car is working. Every silver lining has a cloud I guess!
