Yesterday morning was very odd. You see, a few weeks ago a friend of mine was killed in a car accident, and the funeral was yesterday. Now, because of the new lockdown measures in England, I was unable to travel to the funeral. I was actually quite upset that I couldn’t go, but I knew I wasn’t the only one. The service was live streamed over the interweb, and the link was sent to me a few days beforehand.
The email that came with the the link came with a warning. It said that the stream would be active from 5 mins before the service was due to start, but, as timings could run over a little bit it was possible you could see the end of the service before and to use discretion when watching. Now, apart from the great intrusion of privacy it would have been to see a strangers funeral service, I really wasn’t sure I wanted to see something I shouldn’t, it just didn’t feel right. In fact. I wasn’t really sure I liked the idea at all of sitting here, in my living room, alone, watching the funeral of a friend on my computer, the whole thing seemed very surreal to me.
Nevertheless, at 5 to the hour I logged on, and I needn’t have worried about seeing anything I shouldn’t, that never happened, the stream went straight to the correct service in the chapel. It’s accurate to say I sat and sobbed the whole way through, and I still felt it was a little bit odd, but I am glad I got to be there virtually as I couldn’t be there in person. I did feel a bit empty afterwards, and I went out to take my sister’s dogs for a nice long walk, off the beaten track, to clear my head and get back to feeling something like normal, and it worked…
